Editing Built-in Content

Before deciding to edit your built-in content it is ESSENTIAL that you read and understand the following points.

One of the major new features of TrainzObjectz 5.0 is the ability to edit the built-in content. The built-in content is encoded into a number of files with .ja extensions (for example 3rd_Party_assets.ja) which are in the Trainz\World folder. Editing these directly is not possible (and would be unsafe), but to speed up the starting procedure Trainz creates another set of files (commonly called "chump" or "cache" files) which contain the essential information extracted from the .ja files. These "cache" files are stored in the Trainz\Cache folder and are automatically re-created by Trainz if the original files become corrupted or are missing. This makes it possible to safely edit the files. TrainzObjectz keeps a copy of the original unedited files so that you can return to the default setup at any time.

Before deciding to edit your built-in content, however, you should understand the limitations. In particular, you should be aware that such editing cannot be regarded as permanent, and the changes you make may be lost (or have to be removed) in certain circumstances:

  1. Before installing a Service Pack or patch to Trainz, you MUST return all the "cache" files to their original settings. If you do not do this the installation of the Service Pack or patch may give errors and fail. To avoid this, before installing the Service Pack/patch you should run TrainzObjectz, go to the Builtin Content page, right-click the grid and choose "Reset all Built-in Content" from the menu.
  2. If a new version of TrainzObjectz includes an updated list of built-in content, or if you need to reinstall TrainzObjectz for any reason, you will also need to reset the built-in content to its original state as detailed above before doing so. Failure to do this will mean that Trainz continues to refer to the built-in content by the edited names, while TrainzObjectz will revert to using the default names.
  3. If at any time Trainz fails to show the built-in content correctly, or if you need to seek help about Trainz either from Auran or elsewhere, you should first reset the content as detailed above and see if that solves the problem. Auran will not support your copy of Trainz while it contains edited built-in content.
