Part 3 - Adding the Front Entrance

Next we will add the main entrance to the building. This starts with a box about 17'-0" wide by 23'-0" high by 3'-0" deep (5.0 x 7.0 x 0.9 metres) added at the centre of the front of the building:

Adding the front entrance

Now use the Material Editor to create a new material using the composite image of the front of the Bank which we created earlier, and apply this to the new box in the same way we did with the texture of the bricks in Part 2 of this tutorial. It will look a little odd at this stage!:

Front texture applied

As with the main box, click the UVW Map button in the Command Panel and select Box. Then click the Unwrap UVW button followed by the Edit button just as before. Instead of "tiling" the texture as we did with the main box, we need to select the correct part of the image for each of the visible faces of the new box. First, adjust the white rectangular outline as shown below:

Adjusting the UVW mapping

This will apply the correct portion of the image to the front face of the new box. It will also apply the same image to the other faces of the box. All but two of these other faces will be invisible and will later be deleted from the model, but the two side faces need further adjustment. Close the Edit UVWs dialog and then, in the Command Panel, click the little "+" sign beside the entry Unwrap UVW Plus sign. This will reveal the entry Select Face which you should now click.

Back in the model, click one of the side faces of the new rectangle and then, holding down the Ctrl key, click the other side face. Now click the Edit button in the Command Panel once more. In the Edit UVWs dialog, click the Filter Selected Faces button at the bottom of the dialog: Filter Selected Faces. Adjust the white rectangular outline as shown below:

Adjusting for the two side faces

Close the Edit UVWs dialog and then click Unwrap UVW in the Command Panel (the entry at the bottom, not the button) to de-select Select Face. The model should now look like this:

Adding the Roof to the Main Entrance

Next we will put the roof on the main entrance. Click the Create tab at the top of the Command Panel Create Tab and then click the Shapes button just below it Shapes button. Using the Line tool from the Command Panel draw the roughly triangular shape of the front of the roof section in the Front viewport of gMax as shown:

Click the Modify tab at the top of the Command Panel and then click the Extrude button below it. In the Parameters area at the bottom set the Amount to 3'0.0 (for some reason gMax will show this as 2'12.0"!) or 0.9m. Using the Move tool, move the extruded roof so that it lines up with the main entrance rectangle (use gMax's Left view to do this). The model now looks like this:

The current state of the model

Click the Material Editor button and apply the same texture to the roof section as we did to the entrance box. As before, click the UVW Map button and select Box. Again, click the Unwrap UVW button and select Select Face as we did when unwrapping the UVW on the sides of the entrance. Click the front of the roof triangle to select it and then click the Edit button in the Parameters section of the Command Panel. Select the Filter Selected Faces button in the Edit UVWs dialog and carefully adjust the white outline as shown below:

Adjusting the texture on the roof front

Select the four remaining visible faces of the roof section (remember to hold down the Ctrl key after selecting the first one). In the Edit UVWs dialog, select all the visible handles (drag a rectangle around the whole thing). Select the Scale tool from the toolbar at the top and resize everything until it is small enough to fit as shown below (you will need to zoom in to do this):

Your model should now look like this:
