Part 3 - Applying the Texture (gMax 1.2)

In this stage we will apply the image we scanned earlier to the rectangle we've just drawn. There are two versions of gMax, the earlier version using a different Material Editor. If you are still using gMax 1.1 you have an easier task ahead and should see the alternative section. If you are using gMax 1.2 continue below:

  1. Click the Material Editor button on the Toolbar - . This will open up the Material Editor as shown below:

    Material Editor

  2. Click the New button at the top of the Editor. This will open up the "New Material" dialog. gMax will name the new material for you (probably Material #1) but you can change the name if you wish. As we are only using one material it isn't really worth it.

  3. In the "New Material" dialog, select Standard and then click the OK button.

    New Material dialog

  4. Back in the Material Editor, click the Maps bar at the bottom. This should open a new section in the Editor. If it doesn't, click the Maps bar again.

  5. On the Diffuse Color row, click the button marked none in the Map column. This will open the "Material Navigator".

    Material Navigator

  6. In the "Material Navigator" click Bitmap and then click OK.

  7. From the "Select Bitmap Image File" dialog, navigate to the colored image of the Larch which we saved in the first section of this tutorial. Click the Open button when you've selected it.

    Select Bitmap Image File dialog

  8. Back once again in the "Material Editor", click the Go to parent button.

    Go to Parent button

  9. On the Opacity row, click the button marked none in the Map column and follow the same procedure as in steps 5 to 7 above to select the gray-scale image of the Larch.

  10. Click the Go to parent button once again.

  11. At this point you need to scroll up to the top of the Map panel. You can either drag the small scrollbar on the right of the window, or if your mouse has a wheel, you can hold down the wheel over a blank part of the window and drag the window down.

  12. At the top of the panel, click the 2-sided checkbox to select it.

    '2-sided' checkbox

  13. Click the Apply button in the top section of the Material Editor and then click the Show map in viewport button just below and to the right of it. The image will not show on the rectangle - DO NOT PANIC!

'Apply' button and 'Show map in viewport' button

  14. Close the Material Editor and click the Modify tab in the Command Panel.

  15. Click the UVW Map button lower down the Command Panel - the texture should now appear on your rectangle.

We now have a two-dimensional tree; the next stage is to make is more 3-dimensional...
